OpenAI's 'Bel' Is Reportedly GPT-6.2 Betelgeuse, per Leak
A leaked internal tracker screenshot reportedly shows OpenAI codename 'Bel' as GPT-6.2 Betelgeuse, built on the Dougtrio pretraining series.
The name of OpenAI's next model may once again have surfaced on social media before the company said a word.
According to a leak, the model known inside OpenAI as "Bel" is GPT-6.2 Betelgeuse, named after the red supergiant, and is said to be built on an internal pretraining series called "Dougtrio." The leaker posted on X what is described as a screenshot from an internal OpenAI tracker, putting a version number on a codename that until now existed only as rumor.
From "Doug" to "Bel"
"Bel" is not a new name. In August a leak claimed OpenAI had finished a new pretraining run codenamed Bel, reportedly larger than 10 trillion parameters and positioned as the successor to "Doug." Speculation has run for two months since: some said it would ship as GPT-6.5, others bet on GPT-7 and predicted a launch before year-end.
The latest leak gives a different answer. Bel reportedly stands for Betelgeuse and maps to GPT-6.2. If true, OpenAI may not be branding this large pretraining run as a major version at all, sticking instead with point releases in the GPT-6 line. The name "Dougtrio" hints that the Doug pretraining series may have reached a third generation, or some three-part combination.
What the name might signal
If Betelgeuse holds up, the naming is telling. Calling a model rumored to exceed 10 trillion parameters after a red supergiant leaves little doubt about scale. Giving it only a 6.2 version number is notably restrained.
That restraint is probably deliberate. The overhyped GPT-5 launch and the backlash that followed are still fresh, and OpenAI has since favored smaller, more frequent releases, using .1 and .2 increments to manage expectations. Slotting a new base pretraining run into a point release smooths the product cadence and avoids the scrutiny that comes with a generational leap.
There is another reading too: GPT-6.2 could be an interim product built on an early Bel checkpoint, with the full benefit of the run saved for a bigger version number later.
Beyond the screenshot, nothing is settled
The Betelgeuse name comes from a single leak and conflicts with earlier talk of GPT-6.5 and GPT-7. OpenAI has not responded, and capabilities, timing and pricing are all blank.
Still, with Gemini, Claude and Grok all shipping updates in the second half of 2026, OpenAI's next move will be scrutinized closely. Whether Bel ends up as 6.2 or 7 matters less than whether the giant pretraining run rumored for two months delivers a real jump in capability.
