Apple Intelligence Comes to China in iOS 27.3, With Alibaba's Qwen
Apple says its first Apple Intelligence features reach China via an iOS beta on Nov 4 and iOS 27.3 in December, with Qwen built in.
Siri AI isn't included.
After nearly two years of waiting, iPhone users in mainland China finally have a date. In a press release on its China newsroom, Apple said the first Apple Intelligence features open for testing in the latest iOS developer beta on November 4 and ship to everyone with iOS 27.3 in December.
This first wave is the foundation layer: Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up in Photos, natural-language photo search, notification summaries and priority notifications, Smart Reply, Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, Live Translation with AirPods, and Visual Intelligence—all powered by Apple's own generative models. The other headline is Alibaba. Users can tap Qwen directly inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence to ask about photos, PDFs and presentations, or have it draft content from scratch, by signing into a Qwen account or using Sign in with Apple. It mirrors the ChatGPT integration Apple shipped abroad.
The limits are explicit. Siri AI and the other next-generation features from WWDC 2026 are not part of this release, and Image Playground is absent. The rollout is iPhone-only; Mac, iPad and other devices wait on approvals. Supported models are iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo, with device and Siri language set to English or Simplified Chinese.
The road was bumpy. Apple reportedly trained a China-specific model with Alibaba's help; regulators cleared the setup in July, and features briefly went live in March before approval. Shipping matters beyond a checklist: in China's premium phone market, AI is a standard selling point on Android flagships, and an AI-less iPhone was a real weakness.
Expectations should stay measured. The first features are utilitarian, the Siri that could change how people use the phone hasn't arrived, and Qwen is an opt-in add-on whose quality depends on how cleanly the two systems mesh. Apple's real AI fight in China starts in December.
