Meta and Fourier ship an internal humanoid prototype codenamed Max
Meta Platforms has built a humanoid robot prototype with Chinese robotics company Fourier Intelligence and is already working on a second version. The two sides completed the first unit in about three months. Internally called Max, it stands about 1.5 metres tall, weighs roughly 106 pounds (about 48 kg), runs on an Nvidia Jetson Thor chip, and carries a display that can mimic facial expressions, built-in speakers, and five-fingered hands designed to handle small objects.
Meta’s robotics team travelled to China to work with Fourier; Li-Chen Miller, vice president of product for robotics, spent nearly two months at the startup’s Shanghai factory. Max was shown to some Meta employees at an internal robotics summit in late August. Meta says the collaboration is for internal research and experimentation and that it has no plans to sell the units.
Max 2 redesigns the torso and hands; Muse gets a physical path into the home
Development of a second prototype, Max 2, began in September. The update is expected to bring a redesigned torso, improved hands for object handling, a projector, and extra sensors to help with stairs. Meta frames humanoid robots as a physical extension of its Muse AI agent, with a longer-term aim of machines that can help with household tasks; its May acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence added models that help robots understand and adapt to human behaviour. A U.S.–China software-and-hardware pairing walking a first prototype out of the lab in three months pushes the home-robotics race another step forward.
