U.N. Warns Climate Overshoot Could Divert Funds From Energy Transition cover image

Humanity is now highly likely to exceed the critical 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold, setting off a cycle in which mounting climate disasters strain public finances and divert resources from long-term clean energy investment, according to a new United Nations report.

The U.N. Environment Programme on Wednesday released a special report warning that a prolonged temperature overshoot would force governments to shift fiscal, administrative and political capacity toward emergency relief and reconstruction.

That repeated crisis response, it said, could crowd out investment needed for deep decarbonization and climate-resilient infrastructure, reinforcing a cycle in which delays to the energy transition prolong the period of elevated warming.
